A rare testimony to Bavarian castle history

The history of Hofhegnenberg Castle begins in the 13th century. Built in a strategically favourable location, a fortified castle was initially built here to secure and control the surrounding land. Over the centuries, the complex underwent fundamental changes.

The fortified castle gradually developed into a prestigious aristocratic residence, where defence increasingly took a back seat and living, representation and social life gained in importance. In the 16th century in particular, Hofhegnenberg took on the castle-like appearance that still characterises it today. The various construction phases can still be seen in the building itself and make the historical changes visible.

Wars, change and permanence

Hofhegnenberg's history is characterised by the fact that the castle survived the Thirty Years' War largely unscathed. While numerous castles and palaces were destroyed or severely damaged during this period, a large part of the historical substance was preserved here. Over the centuries, the castle has changed hands several times and each era has left its mark.

Special rooms with history

The coat of arms room is one of the most impressive rooms in the castle. The coats of arms displayed there tell of former owners, family connections and historical alliances. History becomes tangible here not in numbers and dates, but as a visible, living tradition.

Another special room is the historical library. It radiates calm and concentration and combines old books, a historical globe and a very special atmosphere. The library symbolises education, intellectual openness and the passing on of knowledge across generations and is one of the most characteristic places in the castle.

The Knights' Hall was once the centre of social life at Hofhegnenberg. Parties, receptions and special occasions took place here, and even today the room fulfils a unifying function in a different form. Its size and effect still convey the prestigious ambience of times gone by.

Part of the European Heritage Project

Schloss Hofhegnenberg is part of the European Heritage Project, an initiative dedicated to the preservation of important historical buildings in Europe. The aim of the project is to preserve cultural heritage in the long term, carefully restore it and make it accessible to future generations.

The focus is not on staging the castle as a museum, but on respectful treatment of the existing building fabric and the sustainable use of historical sites. By being integrated into the European Heritage Project, Schloss Hofhegnenberg is protected as an important cultural monument and at the same time developed as a living place with history.
